Two Proposals Approved by RDC XI

Last October 3, 2011, the Economic Development Committee of the Regional Development Council XI deliberated two of our proposals, namely: In country Training for the Expansion of the Local Governance and Rural Empowerment Project for Davao Region (LGREP 2); and Management of Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Davao Region.”

The LGREP 2, which is being proposed for funding under the Technical Cooperation Project of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for JFY 2012, is the successor project to LGREP 1 which was implemented last July 2007 - July 2010. It aims to improve the capacity of the local government units in the Davao Region, including the municipalities, in delivering basic services especially water supply services. The project has three (3) components, namely: a) Capacity Enhancement on Groundwater Development for the municipal LGUs; b) Capacity Enhancement on the Integration of the LGREP database to Geographic Information System (GIS); and c) Capacity Enhancement on Community Organizing/ Development for the Strengthening of People's Organization (POs) in the sustainable management of livelihood programs.

On the other hand, the Management of MPA was submitted for funding under the NEDA KR2 Productivity Enhancement Program. The proposal was prepared in line with the Marine and Coastal Resources Protection Act of 2011, which provides the establishment, maintenance and management of MPAs in all coastal areas and ensures the participation of the community. The project aims to improve the management of 10 pilot MPAs in Davao Gulf, sustain fisheries utilization in the adjacent fishing areas of the MPAs, and protect and conserve the ecosystem of the Davao Gulf.

The two proposals were endorsed by the Regional Development Council last October 6, 2011.
